Highlight passages you want to remember in an article you're reading in Reader. You can export your highlights to a Markdown file.

## Add a highlight

1. Open an article in Reader.
2. Select the text you want to highlight.
3. Choose :ui[Item] > :ui[Add Highlight]. You can also use the highlight button in the bar at the top, or right-click the selected text.

Choose a color with :ui[Item] > :ui[Highlight]: :ui[Yellow], :ui[Green], :ui[Blue], :ui[Pink], or :ui[Purple]. Yellow is the default.

Click a highlight to show buttons for changing its color and a trash button for removing it. If you right-click selected text and choose :ui[Highlight], you can pick :ui[Yellow], :ui[Green], :ui[Blue], :ui[Pink], or :ui[Purple].

Highlighted text is included in search.

## Export to Markdown

1. Open an article with highlights in Reader.
2. Choose :ui[Item] > :ui[Export Highlights as Markdown…]. You can also choose it from :ui[Reader Actions] in the bar at the top.
3. Choose a name and location and save.

The file contains the article title, its URL, and the highlighted passages in the order you added them. An article with no highlights can't be exported.
