Find items with search and filters

On this page
Use the search field in the toolbar to find items by name, note, or article text. To narrow the list by kind, tag, color, rating, and more, use the filter bar.
Search
- Click the search field in the toolbar. You can also choose Edit > Find > Find… to move focus to it.
- Type what you’re looking for. If you type several words separated by spaces, only items containing all of them appear.
Search looks at an item’s name, URL, notes, saved reader article text, and reader highlights. It doesn’t look at tag or collection names. Uppercase and lowercase letters, and full-width and half-width letters, are treated as the same. To find items by tag or collection, select it in the sidebar or use the filter bar.
When a collection or tag is selected in the sidebar, search is limited to it. To search the whole library, choose All in the Search: row above the results. All doesn’t include items in the Trash.
Narrow the list with the filter bar
- Choose View > Filter Bar, or click Filter in the toolbar. The filter bar appears above the list.
- Choose a condition type and a value: Kind, Color, Tag, Collection, Name, Date Created, Date Modified, or Rating. Click Add Condition to add more.
- With several conditions, choose All of the following conditions or Any of the following conditions.
To stop filtering, click Clear Filter. To hide the bar, choose Hide Filter Bar.
To keep conditions you use often, click Save as Smart Collection…. It then appears in the sidebar. See Gather matching items with Smart Collections.
If you can’t find an item, check whether search is limited to the collection or tag you have selected.
