Bring browser bookmarks, an Eagle library, a bookmarking service’s CSV export, or a folder on your Mac into a Crabwise library. The files and folders you import from aren’t changed.

A library must be open. To import while creating a library, choose Import from Another App in step 3 of Create your first library.

Import

  1. Choose File > Import from Another App or Folder…. The Import from Another App or Folder sheet opens.
  2. Click the source. Under Apps you’ll find Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Eagle. Under Services you’ll find Pocket, Raindrop.io, Instapaper, and Diigo. For other bookmark files, choose Import from Another Bookmarks File…. For a folder on your Mac, choose Import from a Folder….
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to choose the exported file or folder, then click Choose. A review screen appears.
  4. Check the counts and the items that won’t be imported. Add to collection is filled in with the name of the source. Change it if you like.
  5. Click Import. Importing… appears, and Import finished appears when it’s done. Click Done to close it.

Everything imported goes under the collection you set in step 4. To stop partway, click Stop. Items already imported stay in the library.

Prepare the file for each source

SourceWhat to do
SafariChoose File > Export > Bookmarks and save the HTML file.
ChromeIn the Bookmark Manager, choose Export bookmarks and save the HTML file.
EdgeOpen Favorites, choose Export favorites, and save the HTML file.
FirefoxIn Manage Bookmarks, choose Export Bookmarks to HTML and save the file.
Raindrop.ioIn Settings > Backups, export a CSV or HTML file.
PocketChoose the exported CSV. If you still have the ZIP, unzip it first.
InstapaperDownload the CSV from Settings.
DiigoExport your library as CSV.
EagleQuit Eagle, then choose the Eagle library folder.

Each bookmark becomes one web link. From a CSV, collections, tags, notes, and dates come along too. From Eagle, images, videos, web links, folders, tags, notes, and dates are imported, and star ratings become tags. From a folder, every supported file inside is imported; subfolders become collections and Finder tags become tags.

Find out what wasn’t imported

The review and finish screens count the items that won’t be imported, by reason. For example: an item with the same content already exists, the file type isn’t supported, or the file is missing. When Skip files with the same content is on, anything already in the library is skipped.

For a full list, click Save Details…. The files that couldn’t be imported are saved as a CSV file.

Thumbnails for imported web links are made one after another once the import finishes.
