  2. Add files by dragging
  3. Write a note

Add images, PDFs, text files, and videos from a menu or by dragging them into the window. You can also save a thought as a note.

Add files from the menu

  1. Choose File > Add, then choose the type of file: Image…, PDF…, Text…, or Video…. You can also use Add Item in the toolbar.
  2. Select the file and click Choose. The file is added as an item.

You can add JPEG, PNG, HEIC, GIF, WebP, and similar images. Text can be plain text such as .md or .txt.

Add files by dragging

Drag files from Finder into the Crabwise library window. If you drop them on a collection or tag in the sidebar, they are added and placed there at the same time.

When another app is in front, a drop area appears at the top of the screen as soon as you start dragging a file. Drop the file there to add it without finding the Crabwise window. To turn the drop area off, choose Crabwise > Settings…, open General, and turn off Show drop area at top of screen while dragging files.

The drop area accepts files only. Dragging a web page’s URL from a browser’s address bar doesn’t add anything. To add a web page, follow Add a web link.

Added files go where the sidebar selection says. If nothing is selected, they go to Uncategorized.

Write a note

  1. Choose File > Add > Note. A new note is added, and an editor for it opens in the window.
  2. Type your text. What you type is saved automatically.
  3. To return to the list, click Back at the upper left of the window.

You can rename the note in the name field of the inspector.

Notes can be put in tags and collections like any other item.

If a file with the same content is already in the library, you’ll see a message like “1 of 2 items have the same content as items that already exist.” Choose Add All, Skip, or Show Existing Items.

If a file can’t be added, a reason appears for each file. If you see Unsupported file type., convert the file to an image, PDF, text, or video format and add it again.
